The Amazing Power of Animals

Woman and dog gazing at each otherI’ve always loved animals.  I’ve had dogs for most of my life and enjoy their unconditional love and affection. My dog has always greeted me at my door tail wagging excitedly no matter what kind of a day I’ve had.

Dogs have always been a great source of amusement and furry companionship. Somehow they’ve helped simplify my life because they have to be walked daily--and boy it feels good to get some fresh air!

For the past 6 years, I’ve been blessed with having my dog, Nori, in my life. She’s a rescue dog, now blind, and is the gentlest, calmest pet I’ve ever had. When I first met her, she put her head on my forearm, looked up at me with those puppy dogs eyes, and I knew she was the one.

My hairy office companion

I often bring Nori to my office to greet people I meet with. I’m always touched by the tenderness and love she seems to bring out in people. People sometimes get right down on the floor with her, stick their face into hers or nestle into her neck.  I can just imagine what Nori would be saying if she could talk: “Yup, it’s a job, but somebody has to do it. Could you rub a little more behind this ear? Yeah that’s good. Don’t feel like you have to stop petting me. Honestly I’m okay with it. In fact, I insist!”

Relaxation

Somehow it seems easier to talk while petting a dog or having her sleeping at your feet. Studies have actually found that having contact with animals lowers blood pressure and calms people. Therapy animals are being used more and more to help people with heart disease, AIDS, cancer, or who are lonely, isolated, or depressed.  Animals get us out of our heads and can for some people, allow safe and nurturing touch.

Animals are used in doctor and dentist’s offices. Nervous kids and adults can find comfort in watching fish in an aquarium.

Can't own a pet?

Owning a pet isn’t an option for everyone. Suppose you wanted some animal comfort, what might you do? Visit a zoo, go for a walk in a park, volunteer at an animal shelter, visit a friend or family member with a pet, visit a national park or farm, or something else?

The power of animals is quite incredible. I’d love to hear what role animals have played in your life. I welcome your comments!
